The existing scenarios generally predict that herbivory will increase with climate warming. An analysis of the published data on the background foliar losses of woody plants to insects in natural ecosystems across the globe from 1952 to 2013 provided no support for this hypothesis. We detected no temporal trend in herbivory within the temperate climate zone and a significant decrease in herbivory in the tropics. From 1964 to 1990, herbivory in the tropics was 39% higher than in the temperate region, but these differences disappeared by the beginning of the 2000s. Thus, environmental changes have already disturbed one of the global ecological patterns—the decrease in herbivory with latitude—by affecting ecosystem processes differently in tropical and temperate climate zones. 相似文献

C4 photosynthetic pathway and morphological functional types were determined for 104 species in 45 genera and 10 families from
the deserts of China. 67 C4 species (64.4 %) were found in Dicotyledoneae (e.g. Chenopodiaceae, Polygonaceae, and Amaranthaceae), the other 37 species were in Monocotyledoneae (e.g. Gramineae, Cyperaceae, and Commelinaceae). 36.5 % of the Chenopodiaceae species (predominantly members of the genera Anabasis, Atriplex, Kochia, Salsola, and Suaeda) identified in the desert regions were found with C4 photosynthesis, which was about 48 % of the total C4 species. Many C4 species (58.7 %) were annuals (e.g. Amaranthus, Atriplex, Digitaria, Eragrostis, Kochia, and Salsola) and experienced long-term droughts, high temperature, and high irradiance. Relatively more shrub C4 species (28 species of 104) were found in Chenopodiaceae (e.g. Anabasis, Camphorosma, Haloxylon, and Salsola) and Polygonaceae (e.g. Calligonum) in the desert regions. The encroachment of woody plants into grasslands, woodland, and savanna has increased markedly over the past century, prompting the use of different physical methods to remove woody plants and restore grasses. Roller‐chopping is used extensively in the Americas, but little is known about its long‐term effectiveness for restoration, and whether its effectiveness varies with the intensity of encroachment. We compared the effects of roller‐chopping, under three treatment intensities (control, single treatment, double treatment), on woody plant density, ground cover, and groundstorey plants at sites of low, moderate, and high woody plant density in a semi‐arid eastern Australian woodland over 10 years. Both single and double treatment significantly altered the size distribution of Dodonaea viscosa, which comprised more than 85% of woody plants at all sites. Thus, roller‐chopping changed the size distribution of the community from an even‐size distribution to one dominated by shorter plants, irrespective of initial encroachment level. The effectiveness of roller‐chopping was strongly site‐specific, with significant reductions in density at low‐ and high‐density sites, but no clear trend in relation to the intensity of treatment (i.e. single cf. double treatment). The effectiveness of roller‐chopping was unsustained over the long term, with the suppressive effect on woody density diminishing over time. Grass cover increased with increasing intensity of woody removal, but only at the low‐density site and with some ill‐defined, variable, and short‐term effects on plant composition. Microclimatic conditions in dead wood influence fungal growth and hence also species composition, but it remains unclear how they influence species richness in nature. We analysed fungal species richness based on the occurrence of fruit bodies on 2 m long segments of both standing and lying trunks of Norway spruce (Picea abies). The number of non-red-listed species was related positively to moisture, and negatively to both temperature extremes and fluctuations. The numbers of both red-listed and non-red-listed species were further differently influenced by trunk diameter and by trunk properties related to the progression in wood decay. These results indicate that the richness of fungal communities in dead wood is shaped by an interaction of wood decay, moisture and temperature fluctuations. 相似文献

- Aluminium (Al) is toxic to most plants. Nevertheless, some species accumulate Al without showing toxicity symptoms. Previous studies have evidenced Al in chloroplasts of Al-accumulating species from the Cerrado vegetation in South America. We ask whether Al increases carbon assimilation through enhanced apparent efficiency of Rubisco.
- Seedlings of the Al-accumulator Qualea grandiflora (Vochysiaceae) were grown in nutrient solution with 0, 740, and 1480 μm Al. Growth parameters, relative leaf water content, Al concentration in organs, gas exchange and apparent carboxylation efficiency (measured from A/Ci curves) were evaluated for 60 days.
- Plants without Al showed no root growth, necrotic roots, low gas exchange rates, and decreased apparent carboxylation efficiency. Al-treated plants, however, showed new white roots and increased root biomass leading to higher leaf hydration, and apparent carboxylation efficiency was higher in these plants. Increased Al available in the nutrient solution increased Al accumulation in plant organs.
- Absence of Al compromised root integrity in Q. grandiflora, thus limiting leaf hydration. No positive direct effect of Al on Rubisco was evidenced in Al-treated plants.

Understanding factors influencing large herbivore densities and distribution in terrestrial ecosystems is a fundamental goal of ecology. This study examined environmental factors influencing the density and distribution of wild large herbivores in Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe. Vegetation and surface water were predicted to have a stronger influence than anthropogenic‐related disturbances (livestock grazing, fires, settlements and poaching) on the density and distribution of wild large herbivores. Aerial survey data for seven common wild large herbivores conducted in 2007 and 2009 and environmental data were collected. Only grass cover explained a significant proportion of the variation in large herbivore densities and distribution. Moreover, only two species densities significantly differed across the Gonarezhou, namely impala and zebra. In contrast, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, kudu and nyala densities did not differ significantly across the Gonarezhou. Overall, the findings only partly support the study prediction. The study results suggest the need to further investigate the roles of environmental factors at smaller scales in order to tease out their relative strengths in influencing density and distribution of large herbivores. 相似文献
